On 28 August 2025, AERO hosted a public webinar exploring findings from its recent report into how long it takes to learn English while learning the curriculum.

The webinar drew on data from 110,000 English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) students in New South Wales public schools over 9 years, examining how long it takes these students to engage with the curriculum on par with their English-speaking peers.

About one quarter of all students are learning English while also being taught in English, with the session shedding light on their language development challenges.

Bringing together the report's lead authors at AERO, along with system-level and academic experts, the session looked at the new Australian research and what it means for EAL/D education and support.

The session also examined how learning progresses for EAL/D students, some of the factors that can influence it and what schools and teachers can do to support students who are learning English as an additional language or dialect.

Led by AERO Senior Manager, Analytics and Strategic Projects, and lead author of the report, Dr Lucy Lu, the session also heard from Elizabeth Campbell, a leader in EAL/D education at the NSW Department of Education and Dr Jenny Hammond from the University of Technology Sydney.

You can watch the recording of the full webinar, including a Q&A session with the presenters, in this video.
